OPTI-FOLD's eyelid treatment awarded in the HealthEDGE Challenge by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto

February 8, 2018

Winning in a competition where all startup teams had a medical academic background solidified Opti-fold's authority in the eyelid healthcare treatment industry.  It was a privilege to be able to compete with among such bright minds.

It all started when Ray found out there was a medical device competition at U of T.  Unsure of what to expect, he began researching online for scientific explanations of how wrinkles form.  Pictured here is Ray introducing Opti-fold to the Health Innovation Hub on Dec 4, 2017.

The HealthEDGE Challenge was held in the beautiful Autodesk Toronto Technology Centre.

Winning in this competition was particularly meaningful, because in order to participate, applicants had to explain and prove the scientific validation of their technology.

All applications were reviewed by the Health Innovation Hub from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine.

About the HealthEDGE Challenge:

  • The HealthEDGE Challenge focuses on further supporting and encouraging early stage ideation and prototyping of solutions that address real healthcare challenges. This is achieved through targeted workshops, mentorships and a Pitch Competition to provide funding as well as access to partners, coaches and mentors to bring these solutions to life.

  • Winners of the Pitch Competition will be supported by one of the HealthEDGE sponsored CLAs (H2i, DCSIL, or The Hatchery) as they develop a detailed business plan outlining milestones, deliverables, resources required, costs and check points to facilitate the development of their innovative solution.

  • The focus of the 2017/2018 HealthEDGE Challenge is Devices for better care, better health and better science.

I sincerely thank Adriana Ieraci for the encouragement you gave me to do my best, Fiona Bergin for all the hours of work you put in to make the event possible, Andris Lauris for understanding the potential of my growth since the first H2i meeting, and Professor Paul Santerre whose trust in the depth of my knowledge -- in this relevant topic -- facilitated an enjoyable discourse that enabled me to push my boundaries in communication.  Thank you so much to H2i for giving us this goal to prove our science in an academic environment.

- Ray
